SOLOHOLON

“…hailing from the outer limits of music and rationality.”

What is SOLOHOLON?

In June 2019, I was fortunate enough to be invited to contribute - as a sound recordist and dubbing mixer - to a documentary about Matt Butt, an experimental musician, lover of noise and maker of extraordinary instruments.

Part of improvisational group The Holons, Matt invited a select audience to a one-off solo musical performance on 20th June 2019 at Sheffield Hallam University’s Arundel Gate Court building. Along with the performance, the previous day’s setup was captured by several roaming cameras.

Not only is Matt one of the most fascinating and enigmatic individuals I’ve ever met, he is also very generous and allowed me and the crew into his process, which has now - perhaps controversially - been committed to video.

I completed audio post-production on this hour-long film in October 2019, and it was screened on 1st November 2019 in the aforementioned performance lab.
